Mandy, the baker extraordinaire, and I had always wanted to start a business together.
Both of us had two kids in college and our last ones had one foot out the door for college, so the looming thought of being empty nesters was upon us. No more carpools to drive, poetry readings to sit through, or finding uniforms for early morning games. Mandy was who I called anytime I needed cookies, whether it was to bring to a friend or just to surprise my kids with after they had a bad day.
Everyone always raved about how delicious they tasted and how gorgeous they looked, and the decorated ones blew everyone away. And because Mandy loves to bake, she never hesitated to fulfill my crazy requests for cookies.
As summer of 2023 came to an end and Mandy and I once again both said “goodbye" to our college kids. We decided now was the time and Hot Mamas Bakehouse was born. We were so excited to start on this new adventure and to be doing something we both really loved, Mandy, baking and me getting to use my creative brain which had been dormant for way too long.
On New Years of 2023 I had my “aha moment” and knew that Hot Mamas Bakehouse was going to be something special. My college kids and their friends came in well past midnight and were ravenous, so I pulled some Hot Mamas chocolate chip cookies out of the freezer, preheated the oven, and baked them for the group.
While the cookies baked, I listened to stories of their night, their hopes for the new year, new stories from college
and old stories from high school, and as I listened, I thought this is what I want for Hot Mamas...I want people to share our cookies with family and friends, to enjoy each other's company and spend time together whether it is over one cookie or a whole batch. That is not to say that enjoying a cookie in total silence, by myself, isn't heavenly as well.
I hope that our cookies not only satisfy a sweet craving but also lead to a warmness in the soul.
Peace and love with sprinkles on top,
Heather
Making toffee requires mixing two of the best ingredients ever - sugar & butter. Simple and yet challenging to get just right. So of course, that's the first cookie Heather wanted on the menu and who could blame her?
What kind of a gym trainer asks for cookies after each workout? The one who our chocolate chip cookie is named for, Jay. A Hot Mamas champion since day one, if we don't bring him cookies, it's burpees for all.
No one can remember why our wacky little group of friends is nicknamed "Barney," but this cookie is an ode to the fun we always have when we are together. If sprinkles are the confetti of cookies, "Barney" is just a party waiting to happen.
